Description: For an unmarried Fulani girl of sub-Saharan Africa, a richly colored mouth tattoo is a symbol of availability. Matrons of the Melanesian Islands are revered for their ample girth and features, which denote power in a matriarchal society.
In nearly every culture, adornment both propels and confines social mobility. Fashion magazines, screen stars, consorts and queens set the ideals for beauty, but they only reflect the deeply rooted cultural traditions that dictate how and why we adorn.
